Top Directors of Telugu Cinema: Sekhar Kammula

Dabbling in both the Telegu and Bollywood movie scene, Sekhar Kammula is another film director carving names into the history of India’s list of greatest movie directors. Kammula made his directorial debut with the independent film Dollar Dreams in the year 2000, which was a critical success and has won him the collated National Film Award for Best First Film of a director. In recent years, Kammula has started making dents in both the Telegu cinema and Bollywood after he made his Bollywood movie debut with a film starring Salman Khan back in 2016, to which he found commercial success. Among his many works, there are three which remain to be crowd favorites, namely Happy Days (2007), Fidaa (2017) and Godavari (2006).

Happy Days (2007)

Happy Day is a unique coming-of-age movie that depicts the lives of several engineering students and how they navigate through university. Set in the Chaitanya Bharathi Institute of Technology, the movie is mostly told through the eyes of Chandrasekhar, the male lead as well as the female lead Madhu, with their other rag-tag team of friends Arjun, Rajesh, Appu, Shankar, Sangeeta and Pydithalli, Throughout the movie, we see these bunch of university students tries to keep their relationships intact all the while tackling university assignments, annoying seniors and overbearing lecturers. In the end, we will see whether some relationships bloom or otherwise and whether all of them get to go through 4 years of university without a hitch.

Fidaa (2017)

This romantic comedy film depicts the tumultuous love story between medical student Varun and a rebellious girl named Bhanu. Having met through their older siblings who were about to get married, Varun and Bhanu spent wholesome days together leading up their siblings’ wedding but a misunderstanding caused them to break the amiable relationship that they had. Due to her sister’s pregnancy, Bhanu went to the States to stay with her and by extension, Varun’s family. During her stay, she and Varun fought but soon rediscovered their deep love for one another but in order to achieve happiness together, they soon realized that some sacrifices have to be made.

Godavari (2006)

Godavari is a semi-urban love story set against the scenic backdrop of the Godavari river aboard a houseboat, also called the Godavari. The film depicts two young adults, namely Sreeram and Seeta, falling in love on the river cruise from Rajamundry to Bhadrachalam. Sreeram or Ram is an engineering graduate that came back to India to dabble in politics for the betterment of his country while Seeta is a fashion designer struggling to keep her boutique business afloat. Disappointed by their own love life and family members, Ram and Seeta found common ground as well as comfort in each other. Through activities on the boat, they both continued to develop feelings to one another but a misunderstanding cased by Ram’s cousin prompted Seeta to leave the cruise abruptly. Though confused, Ram was sure of his feelings for Seeta and decided to truly pursue her once the boat has docked.
