Interior glass doors can add elegance, beauty, and convenience to any home. A glass door attached to your bedroom closet, for example, allows you to see the clean clothes you have available to wear to work tomorrow without even opening the door. For all their benefits, glass doors also require dedication to periodic cleaning and maintenance. Below are best practices for cleaning glass doors inside your home to keep them shiny and functional.
Cleaning the Glass Surface
Before you start cleaning your interior glass doors, be sure to gather the following supplies:
- Clean cloth
- Foam sponge
- Microfiber cloth
- Mild solutions for washing glass doors and windows
- Paper towels
- Rag
- Soap
- Squeegee
- Water
For the first step, take a clean rag and dip it into the soapy water. Next, apply the wet rag to the glass door and run it over the entire surface. This process helps to loosen dirt deposits stuck on your window. It doesn’t matter which side of the interior you start with when cleaning. After wiping with the soapy rag for a few minutes, use a paper towel or clean cloth to wipe the solution starting at the bottom of your glass door.
You will now want to take the microfiber cloth and apply a small amount of the mild solution. It’s also fine to use a sponge or another type of applicator as long as it is non-abrasive. After covering the entire surface of your glass door with cleaning solution, take the squeegee and wipe it off right away. You don’t want to wait too long since this can cause the solution to harden and leave blotchy spots or streaks on your glass door.
Clean the Hardware and Door Frame
The handles and frames of your interior glass doors will likely have a lot of smears and smudges due to extensive use. To clean them, start by wiping the edges of the glass door with a damp cloth. For the next step, use a scouring pad or rough damp cloth to clean the frame where there will probably be a lot of ingrained dirt. Next, wipe off dust at the top of the glass door frame with a dry cloth and then wipe the entire door frame. The last step in this process is to lightly polish the hardware of the metal door.
Pick Up Your Supplies and Tidy the Area
If the floor is wet where you washed the glass door, be sure to wipe it up with a large glass bath towel to prevent anyone from slipping. The walls next to the glass door may be damp as well. You can then put away your supplies and enjoy a clean glass door inside your home.
