One could argue that there is a prevalent stigma around aging. People tend to fear the idea of getting old, mostly because thoughts of frailness and limitation come to mind. However, if you take care of yourself, that doesn’t necessarily have to be the case. We often look onto celebrities for inspiration, so here is a list of five Hollywood icons who truly show that age is not a crutch.
- Bruce Springsteen
The classic rock icon is 72 years old and is currently enjoying accolades and success from his new album, “Letter to You.” At his age, he still performs with a passion that the audience can’t help but take in. Many people even note he looks younger than his actual age. It’s interesting to note that his latest album specifically dives into the topic of aging and passing on. That said, he tackles these topics with wisdom and enthusiasm. Dubbed by The Atlantic as “the happiest Springsteen album maybe in decades,” it’s a perfect encapsulation of the mindset that makes him so vibrant despite being in a demographic usually relegated to images of sedentary living.
Springsteen himself has noted that much of his good health comes from perspective. He is always seeking out creativity, spirituality, and fulfillment from within. And from the looks of it, it’s working out in his favor.
- Jane Fonda
It’s not really a wonder that Jane Fonda is still sharp as a tack and a pinnacle of physical well-being at 83 years old. She has long been known for the “Jane Fonda Workout” that revolutionized aerobics, and she has spoken out about how her mental health improved the older she got. Much of her energy comes from and is poured into her passions — acting and activism. She just wrapped up a successful Netflix series, and she continues to go out to protests for climate change. It’s apparent that the latter years don’t equate to sitting still for Fonda, and it seems the world is all the better for it.
She has also been very candid throughout her life, considering age to be more about attitude than dates on calendars. When asked about getting cosmetic surgery, she has opened up about getting procedures because she “got tired of not looking how [she] felt.” Though she has since shared that her motivations have changed, she has truly been able to use her platform to break down Botox injections and other “taboos” that older women aren’t always comfortable talking about.
- Jennifer Aniston
At 52 years old, Jennifer Aniston is truly redefining how a middle-aged woman is portrayed by the media. She has openly talked about not buying into the idea that one has to automatically look horrible when they hit a certain age. And with her enviable skin, sparkling smile, and stunning fitness, she has legitimately walked the talk.
On her routine, she has shared how staying physically active, having a good skincare routine, and being mindful about how healthy your food is are the keys to her maintaining her energy and looks. But on top of that, Aniston says it’s all about using her voice and being motivated by empowerment. Since creating an Instagram page, she has advocated for being happy in health. In her latest post, she shares how she feels privileged to have a full vaccination against the coronavirus.
- Brad Pitt
Brad Pitt continues to shine on lists celebrating actors who seem to have just stopped aging physically. With his continued stylish looks and healthy physique, many are shocked to find that the star is already 57. After decades of being famed for his work, he finally received an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor in 2020. Watching his speech, you can see how years of hard work pay off and how great minds continue to look forward. With more movies down the pipeline, he is showing no signs of slowing down any time soon.
It could be safe to say his great health can also be chalked up to his exuberance. Despite all his acclaim, he continues to pay it forward by using his platform to talk about real issues, celebrate his contemporaries, and focus on his love for his family.
- Betty White
And last but not least, we have a woman who has lived through countless wars and calamities that have gone down in history and yet remains a beacon of positivity. A true veteran of her field, Betty White has consistently been voted one of America’s most beloved performers. And it’s hard not to love her, what with her continued zest for life and message of loving people and all animals.
The legendary lady is 99 years old, but her demeanor exudes the curiosity and easy-going nature of a younger person. In a feature with People magazine, she notes how she doesn’t see 99 as a milestone so different from 98. Numbers are just numbers to her, as she has kept herself busy. According to White, she feels younger still because of her sense of humor and her interests.
It’s interesting to see how these major figures have taken life by storm. When we see the ideals they represent, it seems that old age is simply another chapter as long as you invest in self-care, find ways to be happy, and pursue the career you want.
