Why Get a Tattoo Cover Up?

Self-expression is an important part of your identity, and everyone wants to be a person that is unique and reflective of their own internal qualities. One way to express yourself is through body art and tattoos can be a vibrant and lifelong reminder of things, places, ideas, and concepts you value. However, sometimes you need cover up tattoos to correct a past piece of body art. There are many reasons you may find a cover-up tattoo useful to have done.

Why Get a Cover-Up Tattoo?

  • Your Old Tattoo Faded: over time tattoos can fade. Your tattoo can become washed out or faded from a variety of causes. These can include changes to your skin, exposure to UV rays, location, injury, or the quality of the ink used in the original tattoo. If your tattoo has seen better days a cover-up can restore your body art to a new condition.
  • Your Old Tattoo Was Low Quality: sadly not all tattoos are of the highest quality, and you may want to have an old or badly done tattoo replaced with a better piece of artwork. Modern tattoos can be very striking and cover a wide assortment of styles. There’s no reason to keep a low-quality tattoo when options exist to replace it. Plus if you like the idea of your old tattoo you can easily cover it up with something similar but of a higher quality.
  • You No Longer Want the Old Tattoo: sometimes an old tattoo may not be something you want on your body anymore. This can be because it’s the name of an ex-spouse, something you’re no longer a fan of or something you do still want but want to make some changes. A tattoo can be high quality, but you want it to be bigger or worked into a more complex design. While many cover-up tattoos remove the old design some build up on the same theme to create something more substantive and striking.
  • You Feel Your Old Tattoo is No Longer Appropriate: people are rarely static and as time passes, and you go through the phases of life your views on things and what you value can change. You may want to get a tattoo covered up because you are in a new period in life and want an old tattoo covered up with something more appropriate to your current situation. These reasons can vary from a change in your profession, to having kids, to a change in life philosophies. No matter the reason getting your tattoo covered up means you still have body art that is meaningful to you.

Final Thoughts

Personal expression is an important part of your psychological wellbeing it is also, fittingly enough, something that can be very private. Many people get tattoos for reasons that are entirely their own, and it’s always important to remember that the person that should be completely satisfied with your tattoos is you. If one of your tattoos is no longer working for you don’t be afraid to get a cover-up. A good tattoo artist can work your old unsatisfying taboo into something you’ll be proud to have.
