What to Expect During a Cyst Removal

Cysts are surprisingly common and, thankfully, often benign. But depending on the size and severity of the cyst in question, a brief surgical procedure may be necessary.

Did your eyes bulge at the thought of going under the knife? Rest assured, the process is a lot less complicated and painful than it sounds.

Below, you’ll find a quick guide on what to expect before, during, and after the cyst removal process. Make sure to keep reading to find out more!

The Initial Consultation

First, you’ll need to find a local dermatologist. Specialists like those at Mahoney Dermatology know what to look for and can help you schedule a consultation.

During your consultation, you’ll describe your reason for your visit, plus you’ll answer some basic questions about your skincare routine, family health, and any past skin-related issues.

Once the introductory phase is over, your dermatologist will perform an exam so they can make a more well-informed decision. They may decide that the cyst in question is worth removing. Or, they may prescribe a topical cream to help reduce swelling and pain.

Prepping For the Removal

If cyst removal turns out to be the best course of action, expect to schedule the date and time for surgery at the end of your consultation. In the meantime, there are some common tips for getting a cyst removed you’ll want to follow.

For instance, your dermatologist will likely send you home with some special soap to use in the shower the day before or the day of surgery.

It’s also suggested that you don’t eat or drink anything other than water for 6-12 hours before the procedure, as it can mess with any anesthetic your surgeon may use. If anesthesia is necessary, your doctor will give you plenty of notice, so don’t worry.

Finally, it’s suggested that you secure a ride to and from the office. Even if anesthesia isn’t needed, driving yourself isn’t recommended.

The Cyst Removal Procedure

The actual process of getting a cyst removed isn’t too painful or long. All in all, the surgery should take about a half-hour to 60 minutes.

After applying local anesthesia to the affected area, the doctor will make an incision to the area in question, forming a circle around the cyst. Then, they’ll carefully remove it and look for any subdermal abnormalities or remnants of the cyst.

Doctors may stitch up the removal site to prevent infection.

Rest and Recovery

As strange as it might seem, the recovery process is the longest part of getting a cyst removed. Expect to be out of commission for at least a day or two.

You’ll also get some medication to help with the swelling and pain. Make sure you’re adamant about taking your medicine as directed!

Finally, you’ll return to the doctor’s office for a quick check-up to make sure you’re healing properly.

Don’t Lose Sleep Over Your Cyst Removal

As you can see, a cyst removal might sound intimidating, but it’s nothing to worry about. So if you’ve noticed a cyst, don’t hesitate to make an appointment with a dermatologist today.
