For industries everywhere, sometimes you need a great deal of power to get things done effectively and efficiently. That being said, there have been many inventions created to help these industries function at their best. One of these powerful processes, called hydraulics, has been used for a wide range of different purposes. From forklifts to woodchippers, there are tons of equipment that function by the use of hydraulic pump working machines. But have you ever heard of a hydraulic pump? In this post, we’ll discuss what a hydraulic pump is and what these important devices are used for.
A hydraulic pump is used in a hydraulic drive system and helps to convert mechanical power into hydraulic energy. Once a hydraulic pump is in use, it creates two different functions: the first function creates a vacuum at the pump’s inlet and, by the use of atmospheric pressure, forces liquid from the reservoir into the inlet line of the pump. The second function involves the mechanical movement of the pump, which moves the liquid through the line pump outlet and into the hydraulic system.
Pump Classifications
All hydraulic pumps are either positive-displacement pumps or non-positive-displacement pumps. Typically, hydraulic pumps use the positive-displacement classification.
Non-positive-displacement pumps create continuous flow, but they don’t provide a positive internal seal against slippage. It’s important to note that the output varies greatly due to the varied pressure.
With positive-displacement pumps, slippage isn’t that important when compared to the pump’s volumetric output flow. If the output area were to be plugged, the pressure would increase greatly until the point of pump failure.
Where Are Hydraulic Pumps Used?
Hydraulic pumps are used in hundreds of different industries for thousands of different purposes. They serve many vital purposes for everyday actives that are essential to the function of a company. Take a look at some machines that utilize hydraulic pumps:
- Cars
- Buses
- Cranes
- Forklifts
- Drill rigs
- Mowers
- Seed drills
- True cutters
- Wood chippers
- Water pumps
- Dump trucks
- Blowers
- And many more
As you can see, there are many machines that use hydraulic pumps. Without hydraulic pumps, we wouldn’t have many of these important machines that serve a great purpose in our day-to-day lives.
